Students have been combing their creative and practical sides in the lead up to this year’s NIWA North Harbour Science and Technology Fair.
This year’s fair takes place on Friday and Saturday and has attracted about 100 entries from around the region.
There are a range of prizes on offer, with the senior students competing for a trip to Dunedin to attend Otago University’s Hands on Science Week and a camera.
Judging by some of the project titles, the students have come up with innovative solutions to a number of hazards and challenges.
Titles this year include:
- Are bananas the perfect source for uranium?
- Wireless whistle - a device for deaf people to "hear" the ref's whistle
- Healthy or Hell? Nitrates and nitrites in fruit and vege
- Kiwi Shield - a device to deter kiwi from a cliff edge.
- Problems Bot - a bot to help students with in-school problems
The fair is taking place at Massey University’s Auckland campus in the Atrium Round Room. Public viewing is on Saturday from midday to 2pm.
NIWA is a sponsor of six other regional science and technology fairs.
