The Government has announced plans to reform the science, innovation and technology system, changing the shape and structure of Crown Research Institutes, including NIWA.
The changes aim to build a more dynamic system that is responsive to New Zealand’s changing needs and opportunities.
The reform programme includes the exciting creation of a new earth sciences-focused Public Research Organisation (PRO) by combining NIWA and GNS Science. The two organisations have a strong history of collaboration, and we expect the changes will further cement that relationship, strengthening delivery of science and innovation to foster economic growth and environmental resilience. The acquisition of MetService by NIWA will continue concurrently, as planned.
The current timetable has the new PRO coming into effect on 1 October 2025.
While we are working through the transitional process, it remains business as usual. NIWA will continue to honour all existing contracts and any additional contracts established before 1 October. That means there will be no changes to NIWA’s service model, and all contracts, existing or new, will continue within the new entity.
Maintaining our focus on excellent delivery and service for our clients and stakeholders remains our priority. Please continue to engage with your usual NIWA channels for current and potential additional work.
