A close-up of the fish. The dots, or photophores, on them are primarily on the underside of the fish, helping them to blend into their surroundings: the light breaks up their silhouette against the gloomy light from above for predators swimming below them. Each of the fish is about 10 cm long, and the fish team identified them as Lampanyctodes hectoris. Credit: Kareen Schnabel/NIWA
