Drought forecasting dashboard
NIWA and MPI are working together to develop a new drought forecasting tool. It uses innovative climate modelling, the latest in machine learning and other data-driven techniques to predict rainfall 35 days ahead. It will help farmers and growers better prepare for periods of dryness and drought.

New Zealand Reanalysis (NZRA) dataset
Research ProjectNIWA has produced a high-resolution regional atmospheric reanalysis dataset, the New Zealand Reanalysis (NZRA). -
AI flood maps: forecasting where and when, in real-time
Research ProjectFloods are New Zealand’s most frequent and costly natural disaster. Fast and accurate forecasting of flood impacts is crucial for reducing the risk to life, property, and infrastructure. -
Future Coasts Aotearoa
Transforming coastal lowland systems threatened by sea-level rise into prosperous communities -
Forecasting impacts from extreme weather
Research ProjectThis project aims to establish connections between weather and river flow forecasting, inundation prediction and risks to people and assets. -
Climate and Māori Society
Research ProjectClimate has always been important for Māori. It affects natural environmental systems and resources, influences social-ecological knowledge and practice, shapes community vulnerability and resilience. -
Pacific Risk Tool for Resilience, Phase 2 (PARTneR-2)
Research ProjectThe three-year PARTneR–2 project aims to help countries in the Pacific become more resilient to the impacts of climate-related hazards. -
River flow forecasting
Research ProjectNIWA is developing a national river flow forecasting tool for New Zealand that aims to support and strengthen our planning for and response to extreme rainfall events. -
Climate Data for the Environment Services Client (CliDEsc)
Research ProjectCliDEsc is a web-based content management system and product generator library developed by NIWA in consultation with National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in the Pacific region, and with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. -
Quantifying and reducing agricultural emissions of greenhouse gases
Research ProjectAlmost half of Aotearoa New Zealand’s CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture. This is a much higher proportion than most other countries – globally, agricultural emissions average around 7.5% of a country’s total emissions. -
Sea2Cloud – how marine aerosols influence the atmosphere and climate
Research ProjectClouds over the ocean, and how they trap or emit radiation from the sun, are partly influenced by the biology, biogeochemistry and physics of the surface ocean below. -
Climate changes, impacts and implications for New Zealand
Research ProjectThe Climate Changes, Impacts & Implications project ran from 2012 to 2016 and aimed to update and improve projections of climate trends, variability and extremes across New Zealand out to 2100. -
How do clouds modify the response of mountain glaciers to climate change?
Research ProjectWhile we know that glaciers are sensitive to changes in their local climate, our understanding of exactly how mountain glaciers will respond to climate change is incomplete.
